Snorkelling in the Maldives

Consisting of over 1000 islands in the Indian Ocean, The Maldives is an appealing destination for those who enjoy snorkelling.

Famous for its white beaches and incredible coral reefs, The Maldives provides a stunning snorkelling experience to both beginners and experienced snorkellers.

A luxury yacht charter with Indian Ocean Charters will take you to some of the most spectacular snorkelling spots in the Maldives, and because our yacht charters are private, designed by you, there is no need to rush from one snorkelling destination to the next.

What you can expect?

Crystal clear waters and an abundance of coral reefs create the perfect underwater climate for snorkelling.

You can expect to see reefs that consist of hard corals, finger, staghorn, brain, boulder, lobe as well as a variety of table corals.

Living among the reefs you’ll have the chance to spot some of the most beautiful marine life while you enjoy the warm temperatures of the Indian Ocean.

Clown fish hiding in and swimming around their anemones, various butterfly fish, banner fish, giant colourful clams and large schools of fusilier fish are commonly viewed while snorkelling in the Maldives.

Apart from the smaller marine life, you are very likely to also see some of the ocean’s larger species:

Manta Rays

Manta Rays are graceful, inquisitive and surprisingly large, with a width of up to 4.5 meters and weighing up to a tonne.

Although Mantas have similar features to Stingrays, their tales have no sting so it’s completely safe to get up close to them if they allow you to.

Turtles

Green sea Turtles and Hawksbill Turtles are the two most spotted species out of the five that can be found while snorkelling in the Maldives.

These turtles can be inquisitive and friendly when they’re not heading to the surface to catch their breath, so it’s better to stay out of their pathway until they reach the top.

Dolphins

Although there are about 20 different dolphin species that swim in these waters, the most commonly spotted are spinner dolphins.

True to a dolphin’s playful nature, these spinners love to spend time leaping out of the water and spinning in the air.

Best time for snorkelling in the Maldives

Thanks to the tropical climate, snorkelling in the Maldives can be enjoyed all year round as ocean temperatures rarely drop below 26°c.
